The next morning, Greybear took Nessa to a warehouse on the docks.

“What are we doing here?” She asked.

“Two things,” he said. “First, we’re checking out the weapons shipment. Second, we’re meeting up with your army.”

“Wow,” Nessa said, “You’ve really taken care of everything.”

“It’s what I do,” Greybear said, running his thumb along her cheek.

She buried her head into his chest, then tugged him by the hand. “Come on, show me!”

He walked up to a cargo container and said, “Container G69...this is the one.”

He unlocked the padlock, then rolled open the door.

It was full of crazy looking guns and armor. It looked more like an armory from a science fiction movie than anything else.

“Do you know how to use all this shite?” She asked.

“Sure do,” Greybear said. “SHIFT Squad and Sergtech issue railguns for shooting dragons out of the sky, third generation laser vests to protect us from sniper rifles, SHIFT suits, grenades—”

“Okay, okay,” she said, “I’ve got it.”

He grinned and grabbed a vest. “Try this on, it’s a SHIFT suit that doubles as a laser vest.”

“What the hell is a laser vest?” She asked.

“If you get shot at from far enough away,” Greybear said, “It detects the sound of the gunfire, triangulates the trajectory from the sound, and shoots a tight beam that melts the bullet mid-flight.”

“So we’re like...immune to bullets?” Nessa asked.

“No,” Greybear said. “It will save you from two or three shots, then the battery is dead. You won’t be on the frontlines anyway though, so—”

“I damn well will be!” Nessa said. “We’re not arguing about this.”

“Nessa,” he said, “It’s—”

She reached up and held his head in her hands. “It’s my throne, my father, my enemies.”

Greybear took in a deep breath and sighed. “Fine,” he said. “Correction though...our enemies.”

She thought about that, and she almost said “our throne,” but it wasn’t the time for that conversation just yet.

“So,” Nessa said, “When do we meet the army?”

Greybear checked his watch. “They should be arriving now, come on.”
